Todd Gurley’s Monster Stretch Giving Him a Shot at MVP
Last week, I was suggesting Jared Goff should have had odds posted for MVP. Maybe he didn’t deserve to win, but I felt he was at least a top-10 candidate, if not top-5. I did not, however, mention his teammate Todd Gurley. Just call him King Todd III.
Talk about an orgasmic two weeks in daily fantasy. In week 15, he casually went for 48 Draftkings points thanks to three touchdowns and 180 total yards. No topping that, right?
This Sunday, he put up 55.6 points on Draftkings! With 118 rushing yards, 158 receiving yards, and two more touchdowns, Gurley is making any doubters curl up into the fetal position. He’s also making Bovada seriously reconsider their MVP odds.
It’s down to two! At least that’s what Bovada thinks. Gurley’s second consecutive huge game improved his odds from 20/1 to 2/1, nearly a 30% jump in implied probability. He now leads the league in rushing with 1,305 yards, but that’s only the beginning. He also has 788 receiving yards, good for 28th in the league and tops among running backs.
What really makes him stick out from the pack, though, is his 19 touchdowns. With 13 on the ground and six in the air, Gurley has six more scores than the next best guy, DeAndre Hopkins. He’s the main reason why the Rams are averaging a league best 31 points per game and why they’ve surprised everyone with an NFC West title.
Don’t forget about the GOAT, though. At -300, Tom Brady still has the best odds. Despite being a Patriots fan, I would not bet Brady at -300. I know how the media hates the Patriots and given the somewhat expected performance of Brady, many voters may opt for Gurley or other names.
I believe there is value at +200 for Gurley and I honestly wish there were a few more names listed. This should be a very close race, as there could be arguments made for several players including Brady, Gurley, Goff, Carson Wentz, and potentially others.
With Brady and Gurley both potentially playing very little in their week 17 affairs, we may or may not see any changes in the odds. Stay tuned!
