2016 NFL Week 5 Opening Line Report

2016 NFL Week 5 Opening Line Report

Concussions took out two of the NFC’s best starting quarterbacks in Week 4. Carolina’s Cam Newton and Arizona’s Carson Palmer left their respective games after displaying concussion symptoms. Both quarterbacks have started out poorly and are a combined 2-6 ATS this season.

Newton and Palmer are not the only key players dealing with injuries. Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant (foot) remains questionable, while Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (calf) is doubtful to play. You can track the status of these players by visiting our free NFL injury page.

Below are all of the opening and current lines for Week 5 from Bookmaker compared to the lookahead lines that CG Technology posted back in April.

*- Game was originally off the board

As seen in previous weeks, the biggest differences between the lookahead lines are in matchups where there is a potential change at the quarterback position. It’s unlikely that Palmer will be back in the pocket for the Cardinals on a short week, meaning backup Drew Stanton will get the nod against the 49ers. At the time of publication Stanton and the Cardinals were receiving 77% of spread bets and 90% of spread dollars. Heavy action on the Cardinals has caused them to move from -2.5 to -3 at Bookmaker.

It is unclear whether Newton will play in Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay and, as a result, that game is off the board. There might be a chance that he plays given the amount of rest he’ll receive. Newton needs to go through the NFL’s mandated concussion protocol, which requires a doctor to clear him before he returns under center.

Two quarterbacks went down in Week 4, but another previously absent QB will make his long awaited debut. New England’s franchise quarterback, Tom Brady, returns this week after serving a four-week suspension. Last week Belichick’s team suffered a crushing loss and did not cover the spread against division rival Buffalo Bills. Despite their Week 4 struggles, oddsmakers like the Patriots, who opened as 10-point favorites. After failing to cover the spread, the Patriots are 30-22 ATS (+7.32 u). However, that number only gets better when Pats are visitors following a failed cover (22-11, +10.5 u).
