Sunday Wraps Up Week 1 of NFL Preseason

Sunday Wraps Up Week 1 of NFL Preseason

If you’ve been a contrarian bettor this NFL preseason, you’re doing pretty good. Teams getting <50% of spread tickets are 9-4 ATS and teams getting <40% of tickets are 5-2 ATS. Those records both include the Jets who received just 38% of tickets on Saturday night but beat the Titans 7-3. For what it’s worth, home teams are off to a 9-5 ATS start this season.

The most interesting part of preseason is the position battles, most notably at starting QB. The Bears saw a decent performance from rookie Mitchell Trubisky and the same can be said about the Texans and rookie Deshaun Watson, and the Chiefs and rookie Patrick Mahomes. All four teams playing on Sunday night (Lions, Colts, Chargers, Seahawks) already have established starting QBs for the regular season, but the Colts may need to evaluate their backups thoroughly. Andrew Luck’s status for Week 1 of the regular season is still very much in doubt.

Lions at Colts (pk): The Lions are getting the majority of spread bets but Colts are getting most of the money. The spread hasn’t moved off a pick ’em.

Seahawks at Chargers (-2): The road team is getting the majority of bets in this one too, as Seattle has attracted more than 60% of spread tickets. However, the Chargers have moved from -1.5 to -2 since opening. It will be the first game played in LA for the Chargers. The line graph below shows the line movement on the Chargers despite public tickets/money on the Seahawks:

After all three games Saturday easily went Under the total, public bettors are taking notice. More than 60% of tickets on the Under in both of Sunday’s contests.
