NFL Head Coaching Odds

NFL Head Coaching Odds

The Monday after the NFL season is often referred to as “Black Monday” — the darkest day of the football calendar. On this day, heads usually roll as management clears house and coaches for the year most disappointing teams are fired. On Christmas Eve, Bovada actually posted a prop which projected the number of head coaches on the chopping block.

At the time of publication the Atlanta Falcons (Mike Smith), Chicago Bears (Marc Trestman), New York Jets (Rex Ryan) and San Francisco 49ers (Jim Harbaugh) had all parted ways with their head coaches. On the flip side, the New York Giants (Tom Coughlin), Miami Dolphins (Joe Philbin) and Cleveland Browns (Mike Pettine) all announced that their head coaches would live to fight another day.

The head coaching positions in Oakland (Tony Sparano) and Buffalo (Doug Marrone recently left) are still up in the air, but Bovada and now CRIS has posted the odds for four current head coaching vacancies.

Many “hot” coordinators made multiple lists while the rest are mostly rehashes of coaches who failed at their previously location.  If the Raiders eventually fire Sparano, their short list is currently headed by Rex Ryan and Jack Del Rio.
