2017 NFL: Week 5 Opening Line Report

2017 NFL: Week 5 Opening Line Report

If you had the Redskins or the under last night…may the dear lord baby Jesus have mercy on your soul.

Which game will drive bettors to insanity this week? Will contrarian teams continue to cover at an absurd rate? Are the Jets as good as the Patriots? Let’s take a look at the slate.

Bye Week: Atlanta, Denver, New Orleans, Washington

Jets @ Browns

Well, whadya know…the Browns are favorites again! They didn’t live up to their lofty expectations when they were road favorites against the Colts, but maybe things will be different at home.

This line has already seen quite a bit of moment, bouncing around until yesterday evening. The dust has settled and the Browns are just barely holding on as one point favorites, but will it stay that way? Right now, in a shocking turn of events, the JETS are getting nearly 75% of spread bets. That’s right, the 2-2 Jets are starting to attract bettors…what has the world come to?

Seahawks @ Rams

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. The Rams are indeed favored over the Seahawks. Even if you took a peek in Gray’s Sports Almanac this summer and saw this spread, you wouldn’t believe it.

The Seahawks finally covered with their blowout win over the Colts, but the Rams are atop the division at 3-1. They are also just one of five teams in the league to have hit their implied total in three out of the four weeks according to Fantasy Labs.

Last week, Westgate had Seattle pegged as a three point favorite, but the line has flipped in the Rams’ favor. Perhaps even more surprising is how bettors have already soured on the Seahawks, who are Super Bowl candidates on a yearly basis.

With both bets and dollars in their favor, the Rams have moved from -1 to -1.5 since opening. With that being said, I can’t imagine these trends hold up by the time Sunday comes around. I think too many people will jump at the opportunity to take the Seahawks as a dog and I wouldn’t be shocked if they are the favorites by gametime.

Packers @ Cowboys

This should be a great game between two of the nation’s favorite teams. Coming off their loss to the aforementioned Rams, the Cowboys are not getting ANY love in the early going.

Since that tweet, support on Dallas has fallen to 23%. If this one-sided betting continues, they could have excellent contrarian value.

This game also has Sunday’s highest total, but despite nearly 80% of bets on the over, it has fallen from 53.5 to 52.5.
