Is Luke Skywalker Rey’s Father?

Is Luke Skywalker Rey’s Father?

Since The Force Awakens was released a year and a half ago, there have been hundreds, thousands — likely millions — of theories and conspiracies popping up on the internet about what will happen in Episode VIII, now known as The Last Jedi.

Who is Supreme Leader Snoke? Are Kylo Ren and Rey related? Is Rey a “Gray Jedi”? Etc, etc, etc.

JUNE 25TH UPDATE

5Dimes has joined in on the fun, becoming the second sportsbook to post a prop about Luke being Rey’s father. However, the wording of their prop is different than MyBookie’s.

5Dimes isn’t leaving this up to interpretation, as it looks like it will have to be implicitly stated that Luke is indeed Rey’s father. If you look at MyBookie’s prop below, it doesn’t say anything about an Episode VIII reveal so your money could technically be on hold until Episode IX.

The following was originally published on June 13th

Perhaps the most debated topic is Rey’s heritage. If you’re confident in your own theory, now you can put your money where your mouth is because the offshore sportsbook MyBookie is offering odds on whether or not her father is Luke Skywalker.

As you can see, the oddsmakers at MyBookie have made “No” the slight favorite at -130.

Many fans believe that Rey being Luke’s daughter is just too obvious. Most of those folks likely feel that she is related to Obi-Wan Kenobi or another Jedi we’ve seen in a previous film — Qui-Gon Jinn, perhaps.

Others believe that she comes from a completely new family. This is a pretty damn big galaxy we are talking about with plenty of people in it…not quite as many as their used to be, but still a decent number.

Coruscant alone has a population over one trillion. It would be kind of unlikely that almost everything revolves around the Skywalkers and their dinner guests.

If Rey was Luke’s daughter, that would make her and Kylo Ren cousins, which links back to one of the debated theories I mentioned earlier. Based on the events of The Force Awakens, many fans believe that there is some type of connection between the two characters. This connection could obviously be a blood relation, but they also may have known each other at a much younger age when Luke Skywalker was training Jedi.

In this interview, director Rian Johnson says that question of Rey’s parents will be addressed. However, he does make it sound as if the answer may not be directly stated. It is possible that we don’t get a definitive answer, which would likely mean that all payouts would be delayed until Episode IX.

I’m fairly certain that these odds will fluctuate quite a bit over the next six months so be sure to follow us @SportsInsights on Twitter for any updates.
