2016 NFL Head Coaching Odds

2016 NFL Head Coaching Odds

On Wednesday morning Bovada, a popular offshore sportsbook, posted odds for six of the seven head coaching vacancies. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who fired Lovie Smith on Thursday morning, were not listed as an option.

It’s difficult to evaluate which available job is the most attractive to potential suitors, but it’s tough to argue against Tampa Bay and Tennessee — both of whom drafted productive franchise quarterback’s in last year’s draft.

The tables below display how these head coaching odds have moved since opening, and will continue to be updated until the vacancies are filled.

Hue Jackson, the current offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals and former head coach of the Oakland Raiders, is one of the most popular candidates for several jobs. At the time of publication, Jackson was listed as the favorite for the openings in San Francisco and Cleveland. He was also listed as option for Tennessee (+500), Miami (+900), New York (+900) and Philadelphia (+1500).

There were also two interesting revelations yesterday, both of which involved teams from the NFC East. Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (+250) opened as the favorite to be named the next head coach of the New York Giants. However, in the past 24 hours McDaniels dropped from +250 to +350 while Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo moved from +350 to +100 — making him the new front runner.

In Philadelphia, interim head coach Pat Shurmur opened as a +200 favorite to be named the next full time head coach of the Eagles. Unfortunately, Shurmur has plummeted from +200 to +700 while another candidate saw his odds skyrocket.

Gase, the current offensive coordinator for the Chicago bears and the former offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, has the shortest odds of any head coach listed. This major line move is largely based on the news that Philadelphia has already scheduled a second interview with Gase.

Bettors should be wary of several well-known coaches who have been listed as options. Sportsbooks realize that prominent names like Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, Nick Saban and John Gruden will receive bets regardless of their odds. Specifically, Saban and Gruden have repeatedly stated that they have no intentions of leaving their current jobs.

Should any additional coaching candidates that should be listed? Where will Hue Jackson land? Are any coaches offering value? Please leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
