Fallout From Arian Foster’s Latest Injury

We’re still almost a month away from the first game of the NFL season, but yesterday marked the first day of fully padded training camp practice for teams. These are typically low intensity affairs, however, seemingly every year we see a key player suffer a devastating injury before Week 1.

In 2014 Cam Newton (Ribs), Wes Welker (Concussion), Sam Bradford (Knee) and Bernard Pierce (Head) were banged up during the preseason and many of these injuries were of the season-ending variety.

This unfortunate tradition continued on Tuesday afternoon when it was announced that Texans RB Arian Foster suffered a serious groin injury at practice:

Foster is an elite back who has struggled to stay healthy over his career. Last season the 28-year old tallied 1,246 rushing yards, 327 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns despite missing three games due to injury. In his six-year NFL career, Foster has played just 72 of 96 possible games.

It’s interesting to note that Foster (+600) was listed as the co-favorite to lead the league in rushing yards, but we wanted to know what type of impact this injury would have on the Texans. Assuming Foster’s groin injury does require surgery, it seems safe to assume that the star running back will miss a large chunk of the season, including the team’s Week 1 matchup with the Chiefs.

Immediately after news of Foster’s injury was announced, the Texans dropped from -1.5 to -1 while the over/under dropped from 42 to 41. The line movement on the total is particularly noteworthy since 41 is the third most common scoring output in our database.

The aftermath of Foster’s loss was not only felt by Week 1 bettors, but also across the futures market. Using archived futures from BetOnline, you can see the full impact of Foster’s latest injury.
