Sports Marketplace – NHL Edition

Last week‘s win was a close one. Brad Boyes scored early in the first period giving the Blues the lead, but it was on backup goaltender Ty Conklin’s back that the Blues road to their 1-0 victory over the Red Wings. Conklin recorded his second shutout and his third straight start of the season with the win over the Wings. This was the third in five home games that the Red Wings have been shutout, and they suffered yet another injury when forward Dan Cleary left late in the game with an upper body injury. Cleary is expected to miss at least 4 weeks, and with the long list of players already sidelined for the Red Wings, they will have a tough road to hoe in the near future.

Hockey can be a very profitable sport to bet on when you base it off moneyline odds, especially when betting underdogs. The “plus odds” is a reason that NHL moneyline dogs can show value over time. Most people like to win – thus overvaluing winning teams. Our selections on moneyline underdogs will normally hit at less than 50%, but the “plus odds” payoff makes it a profitable investment.

Sports MarketWatch – NHL Games to Watch

New York Islanders +145 over New York Rangers

Tonight we will be taking the New York Islanders (12-14-7) over the New York Rangers (14-15-3) in the first of a home-and-home set of games between the local New York rivals. Both teams have been struggling as of late, with the Islanders going 4-6-0 and the Rangers 3-5-2 in their past ten games, and both are looking for anything to break them out of their funks. The Islanders will most likely look to rookie standout John Travares to give them the spark needed for their offensive game, while the Rangers will get behind goalie Henrik Lundqvist to lead them on to a win.

The Rangers opened at -147 at Matchbook, has since seen a lot of movement and is currently sitting at -146 with 80% of the public backing the Rangers in moneyline bets. Matchbook (32-23, 58% +18.2), our top performing Smart Money triggering book, has triggered a move on the Islanders. We will go against the public, take into consideration a triggering play by a top performing sportsbook and take the Islanders to win at Madison Square Garden over the Rangers.
