Sports Marketplace – NHL Edition

We had to deal with another hard loss last week, as our game was decided in a shootout for the second week in a row, and once again we fell on the losing end. Chicago’s defeat of Colorado last Wednesday is the third of four times these two teams will meet this season. They will face off once more on April 9, 2010 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Patrick Sharp’s third round shootout goal, made Wednesday’s game the third time this season that a meeting between Colorado and Chicago has ended in a shootout, with each team taking home wins.

Hockey can be a very profitable sport to bet on when you base it off moneyline odds, especially when betting underdogs. The “plus odds” is a reason that NHL moneyline dogs can show value over time. Most people like to win – thus overvaluing winning teams. Our selections on moneyline underdogs will normally hit at less than 50%, but the “plus odds” payoff makes it a profitable investment.

Sports MarketWatch – NHL Games to Watch

Phoenix Coyotes +134 over Minnesota Wild

In tonight’s game the Phoenix Coyotes (11-9-0) will travel to Minnesota to take on the Northwest division’s last place Minnesota Wild (7-11-2) and try recapture that winning touch they held in the month of October. Expect to see a lot of tomfoolery and rough-housing as the Wild try to spark a win after giving the Carolina Hurricanes their first win in 14 games on Sunday. The Wild will need the extra energy and motivation to defeat the young Coyotes anchored by veteran Shane Doan.

The Wild opened as a -150 favorite at CRIS, and has since dropped to -135 despite 62% of the public taking the Wild on the Moneyline. This reverse line movement, indicating smart money on the Coyotes, is the type of movement we like to see. We will bet against the public, take in account the reverse line movement and take the Coyotes to upset the wild in Minnesota.
