The Minnesota Wild beat the Calgary Flames in last weeks game. The Wild’s Kyle Brodziak, Andrew Brunette, Mikko Koivu and Martin Havlat accounted for all four of the games goals, with Niklas Backstrom picking up the shutout.

Hockey can be a very profitable sport to bet on when you base it off moneyline odds, especially when betting underdogs. The “plus odds” is a reason that NHL moneyline dogs can show value over time. Most people like to win – thus overvaluing winning teams. Our selections on moneyline underdogs will normally hit at less than 50%, but the “plus odds” payoff makes it a profitable investment.

Sports MarketWatch – NHL Games to Watch

Carolina Hurricanes +132 over Pittsburgh Penguins

We are taking Sports Insights home state team, the Carolina Hurricanes (27-31-8), to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins (40-22-4) at home. Both teams are running hot coming off of the Olympic break and trade deadline, and while the Hurricanes are coming off a tough overtime loss to the Capitals on Wednesday, the Penguins are 4-0 since the break. Despite the Hurricanes selling off players wholesale in the last days of the trade deadline, they continue to perform well and could, with a little luck, sneak into the playoffs. With the Penguins’ Marc-Andre Fleury sitting out for rest and Hurricanes back-up Manny Legace playing well, the Hurricanes are positioned to get a win.

The Penguins opened -138 at Matchbook and has since dropped to -133, and are also garnering an overwhelming 85% of the public in moneyline bets. Though there is limited movement on this game, we like the movement we do have, and are going to get in on the Canes tonight.
