Sports Marketplace – NBA Edition

Recapping Last Week

Marketwatch bet against the public last week, but the public actually got one right.  We had the Nets getting 8.5 points against the league-best Spurs, but San Antonio was able to get a blowout win 102-85.  Betting Against the Public has still been profitable over time as our Square Plays have a 67-54 record (+7.71 units won) during the NBA season.

Atlanta Hawks (+7.5) over Los Angeles Lakers

The All-Star break is over, the Carmelo Anthony trade is completed, and now we can get back to regular season basketball games.

Los Angeles was in the spotlight this weekend, and we will stay at the Staples Center for our highlighted Marketwatch game this week.  The Lakers had their 7-game “Grammy” road trip right before the break, and it started well, winning their first four.  The Lakers then had progressively worse losses against the Magic, Bobcats, and then the league-worst Cavaliers.  Lakers fans and the media were all hitting the panic button, but Kobe Bryant’s MVP performance for the West All-Stars has seemed to hush some of that talk.

The Hawks start the “second half” of the season with a five-game West Coast road trip.  Atlanta has had an up-and-down season thus far but have managed a 34-21 record (only three games behind the Lakers’ 38-19 record).  The Hawks are often overlooked now that the Eastern Conference is very top-heavy with the Celtics, Heat, Bulls, and Magic, but they had two All-Stars of their own in Joe Johnson and Al Horford.

The line for this game opened between 7 and 8 points in favor of the defending champions.  The line has remained steady at 7 or 7.5 at most books despite 65% of the bets coming in on the favorites.  Sports Insights has tracked a CRISSmart Money play (61-48, +7.51 units won) and a separate CRIS Steam Move (179-152, +10.89 units won).  With a later start, there could be some public action that could drive the number up as the night continues, so make sure to login to your Sports Insights account to find the best line on the board.
