Recapping Last Week

We took an in-state rivalry game with NC State getting six points over North Carolina.  The game was close throughout, but the Tarheels pulled away late, covered the spread, and won the game 75-63.

East Carolina (-1) over Memphis

This game is not as nationally recognized as some of the other games highlighted by our Marketwatch articles, but value isn’t always found on the most popular games.  So we will head to Conference USA to get back on the winning track.

For those of you that are new to Marketwatch, we often will take an “ugly” play and this certainly applies here.  Memphis lost head coach John Calipari, but has still managed to have success this season with a 21-8 record.  They are only a couple of years away from being in the national title discussion.  East Carolina University would not be found anywhere near those same conversations.  They are 15-13 overall and are currently in 8th place in their conference.  The ECU Pirates have had trouble scoring the ball, as they are averaging 69 points per game and have a field goal percentage of 43.3%.

Knowing this information might make the opening line look a little suspicious as the game opened as a pick or even as the Pirates as one point favorites!  The two teams did play on January 8th and the Tigers won the game 61-58, which might have influenced the bookmakers to make the line so close.  Currently, East Carolina is only receiving 20% of all spread wagers on this game.  Sports Insights has tracked two positiveSmart Money plays (from SIA and BetJamaica) and a positive Steam Move (Bet 365) on the small favorites.  We are going to follow the sharp money, take the home team, and give up the one point.

East Carolina -1
