Sports Marketwatch – NCAA Basketball Edition

Our last edition of College Basketball Marketwatch maintained the bit of momentum we gleaned from our first win of the season.  San Jose State, 2-point dogs at UC Irvine, got a huge performance out of guard Adrian Oliver.  The junior shot over 50% on his way to a second consecutive 30-point game, and the Spartans defeated the Anteaters easily, 69-56.

Loyola Marymount +2 over Long Beach State

Tonight’s match-up seems easy.  The 49ers could play the Lions all 16 games this season, and the only real question would be whether or not Frank Gore surpasses 3000+ yards rushing.  I mean, Daunte Culpepper… Wait, what?  Oh sorry, wrong sport.  In tonight’s game, two promising young West Coast teams, each coming off a win, will face off.  Long Beach holds the better record and more difficult schedule, but it’s Loyola Marymount who can claim two marquee victories.  They won on the road at Notre Dame and UCLA, placing them at the top of this month’s “You’d Be Absurdly Famous If This Were Football” poll.  Furthermore, the 49ers of Long Beach State have games at Kentucky and at Duke to look forward to before 2010 rolls around, adding importance but also some distraction to the game at hand.

Long Beach State opened as two-point favorites at Pinnacle and have received an overwhelming 83% of spread bets.  The Public certainly believes in them, also tossing three out of every four moneyline and parlay bets on the 49ers.  Interestingly, the line hasn’t grown.  In fact, it has shrunk at a number of sportsbooks, indicating sharp money on the Lions.  And indeed, a Smart Money play was triggered on Loyola at SIA (3-0, +2.73 Units).  They are also one of our college basketball Square Plays today.  The sportsbooks are fading the Public in a big way in this game with such lopsided money.  Let’s hope SIA Smart Money stays perfect thus far this season and fade the Public as well.
