Sports Marketwatch – NCAA Basketball Edition

Washington gave a game effort, but they simply couldn’t stop California from scoring points last Thursday, falling to 0-7 on the road this season.  Unfortunately, they also failed to cover the 5-point spread.  The Huskies trailed by 14 at the half and ultimately fell 93-81.

North Carolina +5.5 over Georgia Tech

The Tar Heels have fallen on some hard times, and as an alum of the hated school from down the road, I can’t say I’m too upset about it.  Before Saturday’s home win against our other Triangle foe, NC State, they had lost 4 games in a row and 7 of 8.  Talented sophomore forward Ed Davis’ season is essentially over due to injury, and an unlikely ACC Tournament Championship may be their only way into the Big Dance.  We all may have been wrong in our pre-season predictions for the defending National Champs, but I know at least one thing even less predictable: Georgia Tech’s game-to-game performance.  They beat Duke and followed it by losing to Virginia.  They beat Clemson and then lost to Florida State for the second time.  Tonight, they head home after consecutive losses at Miami and Wake Forest.
In fact, they’ve lost three of four.  Nevertheless, the Public, saturated the last month and a half with stories of UNC’s demise, is hammering the Yellow Jackets with 71% of spreads bets and 72% of parlays and teasers.  Georgia Tech opened as 6.5-point favorites at Pinnacle, and in the face of heavy support, have dropped to -5.5 essentially across the board.  Reverse line movement like this always nudges us to check out our Betting Systems, and indeed, our best-performing book this season (ABC, +24.9 Units Won) has triggered a Steam Move on North Carolina.  Against all my instincts, here’s hoping UNC gives the Jackets a devil of a day.
