NHL Midseason Update

The NHL recently had its All-Star Break, so SportsInsights decided to take a look at how the NHL Season has progressed.  Due to increased interest in the game since the strike ended two years ago, SportsInsights has supported the NHL stats on our site and has offered our Members the full slate of SIs’ features.  This includes Square Plays and WiseGuy Information — as well as our enhanced Smart Money feature and First Mover info.  Let’s take a mid-season look at how we are doing.

The information on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only. Use of this information in violation of any federal, state, or local laws is prohibited.

The NHL and Profit Opportunities

The NHL is often an overlooked sport.  It is less popular than football.  When football season ends, sports fans focus on the NBA and March Madness.  However, sports investors should keep an eye on the NHL for several reasons:

  • The NHL has as many teams as — and a season as long as — the NBA.  Because of this, there are many games and “profit opportunities” during hockey season.
  • Because there is less interest in the NHL, the markets may be less efficient — creating more of an edge for serious sports investors and NHL followers.

We hope that our Members will keep an eye on the ice — as well as the basketball courts — during this time of the year.

Betting Against the Public

Before the season started, SportsInsights published an article on how Betting Against the Public works in the NHL.  Square Plays can also be used as a proxy for fading the public.  So far, this season, Square Plays has been about “flat” for the season.  Results have been rather streaky, with October and January being positive months, but November and December being negative.  Through early February, NHL Square Plays are flat to down very slightly.

WiseGuy Info and Smart Money Methods

SportsInsights’ WiseGuy information has been strongly positive, with the WiseGuys hitting at 52% and collecting almost 10 units.  Our enhanced Smart Money analysis has shown even stronger results.  Smart Money plays on the sides are fairly consistent on the positive side — with some books yielding more than 10 units in profits.  Smart Money on NHL totals has been even better.  Almost every sportsbook is showing profits, with the average book hitting around 60% on the NHL totals!  We hope that our Premium Pro Members are taking advantage of SportsInsights’ performance in the NHL!

Disclaimer
We do not guarantee that the trends and biases we’ve found will continue to exist. It is impossible to predict the future. Any serious academic research in the field of “market efficiencies” recognizes that inefficiencies may disappear over time. Once inefficiencies are discovered, it is only a matter of time before the market corrects itself.
