Sports Marketplace – MLB Edition

MarketWatch had a positive day for a second Monday in a row — earning a profit based on a split — with two underdog selections.  Today is a light day as most playoff teams get ready for the first round of games to begin.  There is a single game being played today, and the White Sox need to win to force a 163rd playoff game against Minnesota.  These are very exciting times for baseball fans — and emotions that run high can create opportunity.

Sports MarketWatch – MLB Games to Watch

Detroit Tigers +210 over Chicago White Sox

The Public is favoring the Chicago White Sox because they would seem to have all of the motivation.  A win today forces an exciting playoff game against the Twins for the AL Central Division title — and the remaining MLB playoff spot.  Including all bets (spread, teasers and parlays), about 60% of bets are landing on the White Sox.  This betting pressure is adding value to the big underdog Detroit Tigers.  The line opened at Detroit +185 at CRIS but you can currently get +210 at some sports exchanges.

Some fans may think that with everything at stake, the White Sox will steamroll the Tigers today.  We would note however, that athletes are professionals and play to win.  Just ask the Mets and other playoff contenders over this past week!  We believe there is value going with a good solid veteran in Detroit starter Freddie Garcia — who is motivated to show that he can still pitch after his shoulder injury.  Before this injury, Garcia’s lifetime ERA was below 4.00.  This is one of those plays that makes your stomach rumble.  This means there must be some value.
