NCAA FB Betting Trends: Western Michigan vs Michigan

NCAA FB Betting Trends: Western Michigan vs Michigan

The NCAA Football season kicks off next week and several games have been catching our eye.  One of the games we will highlight is Michigan hosting a lesser opponent in the opening game of the season (sound familiar Appalachian State?)

Michigan opened as a 14.5 point favorite at CRIS and Pinnacle, and in the early going, 84% of spread bets are taking the Wolverines.  Sports Insights has seen some reverse line movement in this game with the line at Pinnacle dropping to 14, and the line at CRIS moving past the key number of 14 to 13.5 points.

This line movement is accompanied by five separate Smart Money indicators taking Western Michigan and the points.

The table below shows the betting trends data for the in-state matchup between Western Michigan and Michigan.

Team # Bets Spread % SIA
5Dimes Carib
Western Michigan 686 16% 14% 25% 8%
Michigan 84% 86% 75% 92%

The number of public “square” bettors should drastically increase as it gets closer to game time, meaning the line may move back into the contrarian bettor’s favor as the line hovers around that key number of 14.  With a little patience you may be able to get 14.5 points and that half a point could be the difference between a win and a push.
