NCAA Basketball & Betting Against the Public

The NCAA Basketball Season tipped off on Monday, but the first big day of “major” college hoops action is tomorrow, Friday (November 12) — with more than half of the Top 25 College Basketball teams seeing action.  Saturday (November 13, 2010) will kick-off the first “big” day of action.

SportsInsights just released this year’s College Basketball article in its regular series of articles about “betting against the Public” for each of the major U.S. sports.

For many sports, historical data shows that “contrarian methods” can capture value in the sports marketplace.  In addition, SportsInsights’ researchers have shown that “anti-public” sports investing systems can be aided by keying in on games with a lot of public interest (such as games involving nationally-ranked teams, nationally-televised games, big rivalries or popular teams, or games with a large number of bets).

Interestingly, on Monday night’s opener for college basketball, the heaviest-bet game of the evening had Rhode island, a 12-point underdog, lose — but cover the spread against perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh (an example of the power of this factor).
