Sports Marketplace – NHL Edition

Like the NHL, we are back from the Olympic hiatus to once again bring you this week’s top plays. Our last Marketwatch was February 10 with the Philadelphia Flyers to beat the New Jersey Devils. The Flyers did just that in a 3-2 overtime victory at the Devils’ Prudential Center. Travis Zajac and Rob Niedermayer kicked off the scoring for the Devils, and Arron Asham and Jeff Carter's goals tied up the game to send it into overtime. Simon Gagne scored the game winner with assists by Kimmo Timonen and Chris Pronger.

Hockey can be a very profitable sport to bet on when you base it off moneyline odds, especially when betting underdogs. The “plus odds” is a reason that NHL moneyline dogs can show value over time. Most people like to win – thus overvaluing winning teams. Our selections on moneyline underdogs will normally hit at less than 50%, but the “plus odds” payoff makes it a profitable investment.

Sports MarketWatch – NHL Games to Watch

Minnesota Wild +134 over Calgary Flames

This week we will be taking the Minnesota Wild (30-37-4) over the Calgary Flames (30-23-9). Both teams are returning to action with Olympic medalists. The Wild’s Antti Miettinen and Niklas Backstrom, both of Finland, earned the Bronze along with the Flames’ Mikka Kiprusoff. While the Flames’ other medalist, Jerome Iginla, brought home the gold with team Canada. Both teams are currently just out of the playoffs, and will need a regulation win to keep them in the hunt. The Wild have taken the first two meetings between these clubs. A 2-1 overtime victory back in December in Calgary and a 4-1 win just before the Olympic break at home.

Calgary opened at -148 at Matchbook, and has since dropped to -140 with 65% of the public backing them. We haven't seen many triggered plays today in the NHL, but this is good reverse line movement that we have seen at several books and we are inclined to follow it.
