Welcome to this week's edition of the Sports Marketwatch – NBA
Edition, where the Team at SportsInsights gives sports fans
unprecedented insight into the NBA point-spread marketplace. If you ever
wanted to know what was really happening on the sportsbook side, you now
have an all-access pass with Sports Marketwatch! The NBA Edition of the
Sports Marketwatch will be published weekly, on Friday’s, by 5PM,
Eastern Time.
The staff at SportsInsights.com speaks directly with the line managers
at some of the sports betting industry’s largest sportsbooks about which
games the public is chasing and the Sharps are pounding. We’ll take a
look at what’s in store for today’s NBA games.
Sports Marketplace – NBA Edition
The NBA MarketWatch took it on the chin last Friday, going 0-3. This has
not been a good year for finding value in the NBA – but we have seen
streaks like this occur in every sport from time to time. We’ll keep the
faith and stay with our contrarian value approach to the sports
marketplace.

Sports MarketWatch 4/4/08 – Games to Watch
Philadelphia 76ers +1 over Atlanta Hawks
The Philadelphia 76ers continue to play well – but have not gotten much
attention. As a result, their opponents normally capture the majority of
the bets. In this match-up, our odds-maker contacts tell us that early
“sharp money” has been on Philly.
SportsInsights’ proprietary sports marketplace stats confirm the “smart
money” line movement. With Atlanta grabbing more than 60% of the bets,
the line actually moved from the opener of Atlanta -2.5 to Atlanta -0 in
some places.
Philly +1 is still widely available. We’ll take a Philadelphia team
playing good ball – plus the point.
Philadelphia 76ers +1
New York Knicks +16.5 over New Orleans Hornets
One of the worst versus one of the best… This sounds familiar to
MarketWatch readers – who know that we like to take contrarian plays
(that have provided value to sports investors historically). This has
been a subpar year for underdogs in the NBA, and the inflated line seems
to indicate this trend.
In this David and Goliath game, the dog is receiving a huge 16.5 points.
The public is pounding bets down on the Hornets to the tune of almost
90%! The line has been driven up to a huge 16.5 points and might
increase even more. This game could see the Hornets win by 30 – but it
could also see the Hornets coast in to an easy 10-point victory. We’ll
“bet against the public” (and practically everyone!) – but take the side
of the long-term winners (the sportsbooks!).
New York Knicks +16.5
