Sports Marketplace – MLB Edition

Marketwatch continues its see-saw early season after a home loss by the Indians last Tuesday.  Things looked good after Jake Westbrook was spotted a 3-run lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but things quickly turned south.  Westbrook and the bullpen proceeded to surrender 7 runs to Toronto over the next 4 innings en route to an 8-5 loss.  Vernon Wells scored a run and drove in 2 without even recording a hit in the Blue Jays victory.

Sports MarketWatch – MLB Games to Watch

LA Angels +123 over Tampa Bay Rays

Brian Fuentes tried his hardest to give away Joel Pineiro’s stellar start last night, allowing 3 earned runs to cross the plate in the top of the 9th inning.  In fact, he did give away Pineiro’s statistical win against the Rays, but the Angels recovered with a sacrifice fly from Juan Rivera to take the game in the bottom of the 11th.  Tonight, the somewhat erratic Scott Kazmir will step to the LA mound to face the somewhat unheralded Jeff Niemann.  The young Tampa righty has pitched well of late against light-hitting offenses like Seattle and Kansas City, but he doesn’t have the electric stuff Kazmir does when he’s on.  Both lineups are relatively prolific, and though Tampa Bay has been slugging like no one else in the majors thus far, the Angels have a number of veteran hitters beginning to break out of early season slumps.

Tampa Bay opened between -115 and -130 at the market-setting sportsbooks and has received an overwhelming majority of Public bets.  At the time of writing, that means 84% of runline bets as well as 79% of both moneyline and parlays.  Yet the line has remained relatively stable.  Such lopsided betting, especially in a game garnering a fairly high number of bets, makes this match-up ripe for a Square Play.  The simplest of our betting systems, Square Plays are up +7.8 Units thus far this season, capitalizing on the value created by an overeager general betting populace.  Go out and grab the Angels to hand Tampa its fourth loss in a row.

LA Angels +123

Washington Nationals +132 over NY Mets

Frustrating as it may be, the Nationals simply refuse to remain the whipping post of the rest of the National League.  Since the middle of last month, they have won series against the Brewers, Dodgers, Braves, Cubs and Marlins.  With a strong performance from resurgent Scott Olsen today, they can add the Mets to that list as well.  The lefty has given up only one earned run in his last twenty innings, spanning three starts.  Known in previous years to be prone to the long ball, he’ll have a better shot at keeping it in the spacious Citi Field tonight.

The Public seems to be a tick slow in respecting the no-longer-Natinals, as they are receiving only 36% of both moneyline and runline wagers at the favored Mets.  The line, which opened at New York -135 at both CRIS and Olympic, has grown slightly with the heavy money.  Sports Insights Betting Systems have weighed in here as well, as we saw a Steam Move come through on Washington this morning from WSEX (7-3, +3.1 Units).  Go grab the hot team with a pitching advantage getting plus-money, and thank us later.
