Behind The Betting Lines

All in all, Sunday was not a very exciting
day, so I thought I would spare you the histrionics and over
inflated hyperbole and simply deliver a blow by blow account of
the Monday Night game, a game I often fail to cover. However,
before I could craft my literary opus Tuesday morning, I was
distracted by some very good news. My buddy the Soap Dawg and
the Mrs. presented the world with the next great American,
Harrison Cole. Harry came into this world many of us go through
life, kicking and screaming but glad to be here. I am happy to
use my Sports Insights column to report that mother, father and
baby are all doing fine.
While Harry is in very good hands, blessed
with a loving family, I feel it is my duty to impart some
valuable life lessons to the youngster. But given the fact that
I am contractually obligated to write a weekly NFL recap for
Sports Insights, I find myself in a bit of a quandary. On one
hand, I have a responsibility to pen this week’s column. On the
other hand, I have a duty to provide the H-man with some
valuable information that will guide him through life.
So, before I find myself on the opposite
end of a breach of contract lawsuit, I present to Harrison and
the Sports Insights readers, “Life’s Little Playbook” (as
illustrated through the Cleveland Browns debacle on Monday
Night.)
Lesson #1: Don’t let the bastards keep you
down.
The Browns came into the St. Louis game as
home underdogs and very few folks gave them a chance against the
high-powered Rams. However, the Browns scored a touchdown on
their second possession and were looking to go into halftime
with the lead.
Lesson #2: Always believe in yourself.
If your dream is to become an NFL
quarterback, go for it. After all, Kelly Holcomb proved that
anyone can become an NFL quarterback after he threw two
interceptions, leading to fourteen unanswered points to close
the half.
Lesson #3: When you find yourself in a
little trouble, do not be afraid to ask for help.
The Browns could have easily folded after
the first half, but they regrouped and got themselves back into
the game with the help of backup quarterback Tim Couch.
Lesson #4: Do not ever doubt that Lesson
#2.
Just when you thought it could not get any
worse, Tim Couch further proved that anyone can become and NFL
quarterback after he collapsed under pressure.
Lesson #5: In the balance sheet of life,
sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down, but in the end it
will all even out.
After Sunday’s action, we were up a modest
sum. We had lost all the early games and won all the late
games. However, Monday night’s decision was the biggest in
recent weeks and the Browns failure to cover left us reeling.
But when it was all said and done we found ourselves dead even
after the weekend had come to an end.
Good luck Harry. You are destined for
greatness. And at the very least, you will be more succesful
than the Browns.
