Sports Marketplace – NBA Edition

Recapping Last Week

We went against the Lakers on the road against the Timberwolves last week, but we seemed to have caught them at the wrong time, as the defending champions are on fire with seven straight wins.  Los Angeles did a good job of keeping Kevin Love off the glass as he managed only 11 rebounds and was held to only 13 points.  Minnesota made it close as they were getting 9.5 points, but ended up losing 90-79.

Portland Trail Blazers (+2) over Orlando Magic

We will try to get our winning percentage to climb back up, as Marketwatch has been pretty streaky this season.

It is often tricky to bet on a game where there is a key player missing due to injury or some other event.  Tonight the Orlando Magic will be without their MVP candidate Dwight Howard due to a one-game suspension (16 technical fouls).  Howard has averaged 23.1 points and 13.9 rebounds per game this season.  However, his defense changes the game more than anyting, using his size and athleticism to block and alter shots from opposing players.

The benefactor of Howard running his mouth a bit too much will be the Portland Trail Blazers.  Dwight Howard had 39 points in their first matchup in Portland, and despite the big game, the Blazers won the game easily 97-83.  This might make you think that the Blazers would be a favorite to win this game, but they have played much differently on the road (14-17) than at home (21-10).

The line for this game opened at 2 or 3 points in favor of the Magic.  Currently, 62% of the bets are coming in on the home-favorite, but the line has moved in favor of the Blazers.  For example, CRIS opened this game at three points, but has since dropped to 1.5 points.  Sports Insights has tracked a Pinnacle Steam Move (115-96, +7.71 units won) on Portland, which combined with reverse line movement signifies some sharp money coming in on the road dog.  Let’s follow that sharp money, and get that winning percentage (and units won) headed in the right direction.
