Sunday’s Sports Marketplace

As the NFL wraps up the regular season, many bettors are confused about which teams will “really be playing.”  This could create opportunity — but others may decide to shy away from NFL betting activity.  Let’s take a look at Sunday’s Sports Marketplace:

  • SportsInsights NFL MarketWatch highlights the Steelers-Browns game.  Please read the column for more information.
  • Another interesting game could be the powerhouse Patriots against the Dolphins.  The line opened with the game almost even (Dolphins +2), because sportsbooks have seen that playoff teams with no reason to win, sometimes rest players. Bettors are on the Patriots to the tune of 73%, however, and have bid the game up to Dolphins +6 at some books.

If you decide to lay off NFL action — and want to learn more about contrarian sports investing — please check out the recent Wall Street Journal article on a “Contrarian’s Guide to Football Betting.” The WSJ interviewed SportsInsights’ president, Dan Fabrizio, and highlights years of NFL data that show that “betting against the Public” can give sports handicappers an edge.

In addition, ESPN’s Chad Millman has had a few nice columns about SportsInsights in ESPN Insiders, where he reports about NFL Line Moves.  He also cites the academic article on the trend for Home Dogs late in the NFL Season.
