NHL Betting Trends: Dallas Stars vs. San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks opened as a -200 favorite at the market-setting Cris sportsbook and, according to Sports Insights’ NHL Betting Trends, is currently receiving 80% of moneyline wagers. This one-sided betting percentage has pushed the line to -210.

In our pre-season NHL Betting Against the Public article, we detailed the sweet spots for contrarian betting. Between 2005 and 2011, teams receiving less than 40% of moneyline bets had won 75.8 units — good for a 1.6% return on investment.

However, in that same time teams receiving fewer than 35% had won 118.8 units with a 3.6% return on investment. The article also indicated that visiting teams are highly undervalued, which means it is worth keeping an eye on Dallas as a potential Best Bet.

While Cris has the Stars at +180, there is a great deal of disagreement amongst the sportsbooks with a majority of the marketplace offering +170. The best Vegas line is Las Palmas at +190 while the best off-shore line is SIA at +185. This once again illuminates the importance of shopping for the best line.

The following table shows the breakdown of moneyline betting percentages from our six contributing sportsbooks:

Stars 855 n/a 24% 9% n/a 35% 15%
