2014 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds

2014 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds

Earlier this off-season Bovada posted their odds for the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans (+300) listed as the favorite to win. Bovada also posted a number of intriguing prop bets including “Will Jadeveon Clowney win the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year?”

After seeing this prop bet, it was only a matter of time before oddsmakers decided to list out the rest of the rookie field to determine the most likely candidates for the Defensive ROY award. Although Bovada has yet to post their odds, Sportsbook.com set Houston’s Jadeveon Clowney (+200) and Oakland’s Khalil Mack (+400) as the front-runners for the award.

The table below compares the current odds at Sportsbook.com, BetOnline, 5Dimes and the Greek:

It’s worth noting that linebackers have won the award 21 out of 43 times, including nine of the last eleven (though Jets DE Sheldon Richardson won the award last season). Also noteworthy is that although the number one overall pick has been named Rookie of the Year six times, none of them have been on the defensive side of the ball.

One of the largest discrepancies concerns Carolina Panthers defensive end Kony Ealy. When Sportsbook.com first posted these odds Ealy was not even listed as an option, however, BetOnline and the Greek are currently offering very different prices. The second round draft picks odds are tied with the likes of first rounders Justin Gilbert and Kyle Fuller at the Greek (15/1), but Ealy actually has the lowest listed odds at BetOnline (25/1).

Of the four major offshore sportsbooks currently offering Rookie of the Year, two are considered to be very sharp (5Dimes and the Greek) while two are considered very public/square (BetOnline and Sportsbook.com). That made it all the more interesting when 5Dimes posted odds for two previously unavailable players — Chargers DE Jeremiah Attaochu and Bears DT Will Sutton.

While Attaochu was a second round pick, Sutton was drafted in the third round. However, his odds of winning Defensive Rookie of the Year are better than first round picks like Ha Ha Clinton Dix, Bradley Roby and Calvin Pryor. Perhaps this is based on the fact that Sutton excels as a pass-rusher in a league where players who can rush the quarterback are at a premium. Stats talk, and both Sutton and Attaochu have the potential to post solid sack numbers this upcoming season.

Who do you think will be the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year? Which players being undervalued by oddsmakers? Make sure to leave any thoughts or comments in the section below.
