2014 Belmont Stakes Odds

2014 Belmont Stakes Odds

With an impressive late push, California Chrome was able to win the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes and move one step closer to winning the Triple Crown. Although there have been 11 past Triple Crown winners, no horse has accomplished the feat since Affirmed back in 1978. That said, there have been a number of horses who have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness only to fail at the Belmont, including five horses since the start of the millennium: I’ll Have Another (2012), Big Brown (2008), Smarty Jones (2004), Funny Cide (2003) and War Emblem (2002).

Over the last couple weeks there had been controversy surrounding whether California Chrome will race due to a New York law banning nasal strips while competing. Despite these concerns and amid word that NY officials have altered their ruling to allow the nasal strips, CRIS has set odds that suggest California Chrome will at least run for a chance at the coveted Triple Crown.

Note: Back on May 18th, California Chrome was a -705 favorite to run in the Belmont Stakes. On May 21st, it was up to -1685 and is now off the board entirely.

Will this finally be the year of a Triple Crown winner, or will another horse get in the way yet again?
